30 Stories in 30 Days #04 – “Details”
“And for your final wish?” Kaahime asked.
Thomas rubbed his chin. “Well, I already have health and knowledge, so I guess what I need now is wealth. I wish I had a goose that lays golden eggs.”
Kaahime nodded. “Granted.”
There was a small puff of blue smoke, and then Kaahime handed Thomas a cage containing a large, white goose. The goose looked around a honked.
Thomas lifted the cage and looked inside. “Is there something special I have to feed it for it to lay golden eggs?”
“Mix gold dust in with its regular feed.”
Thomas set the cage down on the ground. “You mean, I have to feed it gold, in order for it to lay golden eggs?”
“If you feed it one pound of gold dust, it will lay a one pound golden egg.”
“Then what’s the point?”
Kaahime frowned. “You wished for a goose that lays golden eggs.” Pointing at the cage, he added, “That is a goose that will lay golden eggs if feed gold.”
“But, but you don’t need to feed eggs to chickens for chickens to lay eggs.”
Kaahime sighed. “You wanted a goose that could convert corn into gold?”
“So you wanted a goose that could perform alchemy?”
“But that was not what you wished for.”
“It was implied.”
“Nevertheless, your three wishes have been granted, and know I must leave.” In a large puff of purplish smoke, Kaahime vanished.
Thomas looked around the empty field. He spent several minutes muttering all the curses he knew, and several he made up on the spot.
Eventually, he wound down and picked up the cage. The goose honked at him. “Oh, shut up.”
