30 Stories in 30 Days Update

Posted in 30 Stories in 30 Days, Stories, Website, Writing on August 29, 2011 by oneoveralpha

I mentioned in a previous post having had some thoughts about my 30 Stories in 30 Days Challenge.  But first, I know it’s a few months late, but I did enjoy the change I made this year of posting my stories to my blog instead of my website.  It was easier for me and I’m going to continue doing that.  Now the change I’ll make starting next year is the time of the challenge.  Back in 2008 I came up with the idea of writing thirty stories in as many days sometime in late June or July.  So the next thirty day month was September, which is when I held my challenge for the first time.  Back then I was also trying to get my Reader’s Choice going (which never really got off the ground) but I didn’t want to have these major writing things going on so close together.  So in 2009 I moved my Challenge to June.  But now I think I’ll rotate through the months.  Next year, I’ll hold the Challenge in April, in 2013 it will be in June, 2014 September, and November in 2015.  I’ll see how I like that, then see if I want to make further changes.

One thing I still need to work on is fulfilling part of the original plan for my Challenge.  In the beginning, one of the reasons I wanted to do this was to force myself to finish stories I had ideas for but never did anything with.  Before the Challenge, I’d make out a list of these ideas I want to write.  What usually happens, however, is I write a few of them and then finish off the rest of the month with ideas I think of that month.  Of the nineteen stories I wrote for this year’s 30 Stories in 30 Days Challenge, only three – “Unkilling Your Grandfather,” “Mercy,” and “From Out of Town” – were from old ideas.  And “From Out of Town” I took in a completely different direction than I had intended.  I could still use the original idea.  So my plan of using the Challenge to clear out my idea box, needs some work.  What usually happens is, I have the list, but then I fall behind and I end up just whipping something together.  But next year I should have more time, so maybe I can stick to my list better.  I guess you’ll have to come back in April and see what I do.

30,000 Words!

Posted in Writing on August 19, 2011 by oneoveralpha

Now that I’m somewhat settled after my move, I’ve been trying to spend about an hour each day writing.  It seems to be working.  Not even two-thirds of the way through August I’ve already written more words than in all previous months this year except March and June.  I should pass March’s mark next week, but I won’t beat June, since that was when I held my 30 Stories in 30 Days Challenge

Anyway, yesterday I passed 30,000 words!  As of this morning, my total for the year is 30,350.  My goal is to hit 50,000, which means I just have to write about 147 words a day to reach that.  This month, I’ve been writing on average 190 words a day.  If I continue at this rate, I should hit 40,000 words by October 13.  You’ll have to check back to see if I make it.

Why do I write Science Fiction?

Posted in Writing on August 17, 2011 by oneoveralpha

Basically, that’s what I like.  I read science fiction, I watch science fiction shows and movies, hell, most of the ideas I come up with are science fiction, that’s why I write so much of it.  But since that’s too simple an answer, here’s something a little more deeper, for when I’m famous enough to be a tad pompous.  😀

Several years ago I came up with a saying that sums up the most basic truth I know: Humanity has but two choices, evolution or extinction.  We could become extinct by killing ourselves, getting hit by an asteroid, a plague, etc.  We will evolve if we go out into space.  Somewhere in setting up bases across the solar system, traveling to other stars, contacting aliens, we’ll stop being humdrum Homo sapiens.  Whether we’ll just become a new species, upload our minds to computers and explore with robotic bodies, something we can even conceive of, or all of the above, I believe it will happen.  I think it should happen.  And I’ve come to believe that my purpose in life is to push humanity on the path of evolution.  Even if I only push us a millimeter, that’s one millimeter less the next person will have to push.

How does that tie into science fiction?  There is an entire universe out there full of wonders we can’t even imagine.  What I do with my writing – when I fall into delusions of grandeur – is to show the wonders I can imagine to try to turn people away from the insignificant, mundane crap of Who Wants to Marry a Pig Farmer or whatever, to the unbelievable majesty of the universe.  Of course, if I just preached that message few would ever hear it.  Instead I have to slip it in something more entertaining.  I’ll let you know if it works.
